What’s In a Name? – La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Digger Cigar

On Thursday June 2, 2011 Cigars & More in Birmingham Alabama had the pleasure of hosting Litto Gomez of La Flor Dominicana to their shop for an event. Those of you that know me, understand that I go back with LFD about 6 years or so when they introduced the Limitado cigar. It was the first ligero bomb, that actually had flavor. To kick it up a notch I was totally hooked once the Limitado II was released. That may still be my all time favorite cigar (the LFD Factory Press I is a close second).

Anyway, needless to say I am a HUGE LFD fan. I have met Litto on several occasions in the past and he always remembers me as 2Ligero for my car tag posted in my La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Digger Review. He always with great sincerity says, “my good friend Kevin, 2Ligero”.

Double Ligero Maduro Wrapper Update

Any of you that are fans of the La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero line, know that in the past 18-24 months, there has been a shortage of Maduro wrapper. The great news is that Litto said this has been his best Maduro wrapper crop in many years. Even with the release of the Digger, he anticipates filling all back orders by the end of this year and hopes to keep all of our favorite cigar shops fully stocked. Great news indeed!

The name La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Maduro Digger and its meaning

Keep in mind, this is all paraphrasing. This was just Litto and I hanging out having a cigar. This was no formal interview and I did not take notes, just relating a story that I thought was worth sharing. I may mess up some details, but the gist of the story will get the point across.

I asked Litto how they came up with the name Digger. He basically said awhile back that he was at a cigar event in Virginia (the name of the shop and city escapes me). There was a guy there that was totally engaging to Litto. He was bohemian and a philosopher and had this big beard….he was very Hemmingwayish (new word). He was a HUGE La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero 700 Maduro fan. In fact when available that was the only thing that he smoked. While the two of them casually enjoyed an entire bottle of Scotch over several hours, Digger (as he was known) asked Litto if he could make him a DL700 that was 2 inches longer? Litto said confidently (I added the confidently, knowing Litto), “Of course I could”.

Litto said a few months later while at the factory in the Dominican Republic, he told one of his rollers to make 20 DL700 Maduro’s, but 8 1/2 inches long and send them to Digger in Virginia. It turns out, that Litto was informed that Digger had just been diagnosed with cancer. Over time, Litto learned that Digger was completely healed of his cancer, and related to Litto, that the act of him making those cigars and sending them to him completely turned his spirits after getting the gift.

Needless to say, Litto decided a few months later to make the HUGE cigar into a production blend and aptly named it the Digger. Litto said the first box off the line was sent directly to Digger in Virginia.

Really cool story and a pleasure to hear Litto tell it in person.

The great news is that for those of you that enjoy the Digger, it is planned to be a full release, not limited release. The first run was only sent to 100 stores, but La Flor Dominicana is already shipping backorders and will soon be releasing to all La Flor accounts. Do yourself a favor and ask your local shop to get some Diggers in stock. In Alabama, this 8.5 X 60 cigar runs around $10 retail. At 3.5 – 4 hours of smoke time, it is an incredible deal. Not as strong as a DL700, but not for the weak to say the least.

Rush Limbaugh and La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chisel Maduro

While I had Litto in a talkative mood (he is incredibly personable), I asked him about the stories about Rush Limbaugh cigars and the Chisel. He said, yes it is true. Rush loves the Double Ligero Chisel Maduro, but personally told Litto that he needed a bigger one, because they only lasted him 15 minutes. WHAT? I am a normal speed smoker and a Chisel takes me 90-110 minutes to finish. Rush must use them as welding rods. So, Litto started making him an 8.5 inch long Double Ligero Chisel Maduro. He said Rush orders them 20 boxes at a time.

He also mentioned, Rush has NEVER asked for a free cigar, he has them shipped to his local shop in Florida and pays the shop for every cigar. Of course Litto mentioned that Rush does not just say ‘Chisel’, but EVERY time he mentions the cigar he says ‘La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chisel Maduro’. How much would that cost?

Thanks to the guys at Cigars & More for hosting Litto this week. It was great catching up with him again. Litto was also given some news that I cannot reveal at this time, that generated a big smile from Litto and a fist bump. I cannot wait until that news can be revealed, hopefully in the near future.

Again, do yourself a favor, ask your shop to order some Digger’s, and get ready for football season. Less than 100 days to NCAA Football 2011 where my Auburn Tigers get to defend their BCS National Championship. Kickoff to postgame is about perfect for a Digger.
